SMITHFIELD PRICES

Seasonal Decline May Soon End

(N.Z. Press ■ Association—Copyright) LONDON, March 3. The seasonal fall in the price of New Zealand lamb on the Smithfield market is now believed to be just about ended. Today'a price of 23Jd lb for 29-361 b lambs represents a fall of 4Jd per lb from the peak of 28d in midJanuary and is a reflection of the rise in imports from New Zealand which this month reach their annual maximum. Last year prices fell by an average of 6d per lb between January and April and in 1958 by 5d lb. One Smithfield wholesaler commented: “There may be a further reduction of a penny or halfpenny during the next eight weeks, but on the other hand there may be ‘up and down’ variations. “The market is buoyant and the outlook for the ‘offtake’ is good.” Although it is known that imports from New Zealand this month will be higher than last March there are no despondent forecasts about plunging prices.
