PULP MILL SITE
Company Looks At Kainga
A possible site for the pulp mill to be established in the South Island by New Zealand Forest Products, Ltd., is on the north bank of the Waimakariri river opposite Kainga settlement. A sub-committee was set up by the North Canterbury Catchment Board yesterday to discuss with representatives of the company an inquiry by the company as to the possibility of purchasing or obtaining a long lease of one of the board's reserves at Kainga. The sub-committee will also ascertain what provision will be made to deal with effluent from the mill. It appeared that the company was investigating plant sites, said Mr A. T. Belt He thought that the company would have wanted its inquiry taken “in committee” but there were no tags on its letter and he saw no reason why the board should not discuss it“The company is looking at sites all over the country.” said Mr Bell. The piece of land, he said, was just north of Durie’s bank and ran up to the area of 25 acres adjoining the south bank of the river in which the board was interested in taking over from the Railways Department Various angles, the rivers committee felt, had to be looked at before a decision was given.
