ORCHESTRA TO PLAY IN N.Z.
Boston Symphony Visit In June
(New Zealand Press Association) M ELLINGTON, March 4. The Boston Symphony Orchestra will give two concerts in New Zealand in June, the United States Ambassador (Mr Francis H. Russell) and Mr J. H. E. Schroder, Director of Broadcasting, announced jointly today. Present plans call for a concert in Wellington on June 16 and a concert in Auckland on June 17. The orchestra is making a Far Eastern tour which includes Japan, the Philippines, Korea and Australia. Mr Schroder said: “Mr 800 rd, the Minister of Broadcasting, and I have been delighted to co-operate in making this outstanding occasion possible We look forward to the appearance of the Boston Symphony with extreme pleasure.” A Sydney message says that on its Australian tour the American composer Aaron Copland will be guest conductor with the orchestra. He is expected to conduct some of his own works. The orchestra's musical director, Charles Munch will be the principal conductor for the tour The orchestra’s first concert will be in Brisbane on June 5 and it will then play in Sydney. Adelaide and Melbourne. The general manager of the Australian Broadcasting Commission (Mr Charles Moses) said: “The Boston Symphony is widely held to be the greatest orchestra in the world. This is one of the most important events in music since the setting up of our own symphony orchestras.”
