MORE DEMAND FOR WORKERS
February Employment Figures
The sustained demand for workers in many fields last month was a considerable improvement on the employment situation in the same month last year, said the district superintendent of the Department of Labour <Mr C. P. Collins). There seemed to be a general buoyancy, he said, and more men were wanted for building, construction, and freezing works.
Job vacancies in February were up 50 per cent and 138 males and 46 females were placed. Unemployment figures for the month were considerably lower than those for the same period last year, when 61 males were listed as unemployed, including 30 unemployment beneficiaries, and 13 females were registered. At the end of February, 1960. there were 46 males listed as unemployed, including 33 on unemployment benefit, and five females were registered.
