British Car Exports
Last year the British motor industry produced 1,189,970 units, an increase of 138,500 on the previous year. In pre-war days the highest yearly total was 379,310 in 1937.
A feature of production last year was the steady increase in the weekly output. If the figures for the last quarter of the year had been achieved In the early months, then the total production would have been nearer 1,250,000. More than 568,000 cars were exported, an increase of just under
90.000 for 1958, for a value of neaily £216.000,000. The biggest and most profitable ■mark't was the United States, which took 208,139 cars, 60,000 more than the previous year. Canada took 73,000 cars; South Africa took nearly 27,000 and New Zealand 22.000. The United States market thus represented a third of the British car exports. Sweden was the best European market with 20,023, then Belgium with 13,701 and Norway and the Netherlands each with 11,000 cars.
