Mary Brown in the Champion Hack Handicap and Tadpole in the President’s Handicap may be the winning double at Cromwell on Saturday, when the Cromwell Jockey Club will open its annual two-day meeting. The weather has been fine and the track is reported to be in splendid order. Neron has been scratched from the Novice Stakes. The three-year-old brother to Kelton was due to have his first race at the meeting, but he will be reserved for the Oamaru meeting on March 19. He was purchased by Mr W. S. Latimer, of Dunedin, for 1000 guineas at the Glentruin Stud dispersal sale early in the week. He is now a member of R. Heasley’s team at Wingatul. Mary Brown will start in the Cromwell Champion Hack Handicap. She has been scratched from the Goldfields High-weight. She will be ridden by the top apprentice, J. R. Dowling. Capet will be ridden by J. M. Cappie in the Cromwell Champion Hack. He also had an alternative engagement in the high-weight. Panam will start in the Novice Stakes in preference to the Champion Hack Handicap, and The Gascon will start in the Members’ Maiden Handicap Instead of the Champion Hack.
