Miss E. Ogilvie Retains Titles

The under-17 West Coast and Canterbury tennis singles and doubles women's champion, Miss Elaine Ogilvie, retained her titles by beating Miss D. Smith (Rangiora) in the singles, and partnering her to victory in the doubles at. the West Coast Lawn Tennis Association’s junior championship tournament in Greymouth during the week-end.

Several Canterbury entrants managed to secure more than their share of victories, but in no section could they completely dominate the competition, as was the case last year. Results were:— Under 17 Years Boys’ Singles.—Semi-finals: W. Watkins (Canterbury) beat S. Naylor (Greymouth), 6-0, 6-1; B. Gowans (Canterbury) beat R. Shaw (Greymouth), 6-1, 6-2. Final: Watkins beat Gowans, 6-0, 6-1. Boys’ Doubles.—Semi-fihals: R. Shaw and F. O’Donnell beat W. Robertson and K. Beams, 6-5, 6-5; B. Gowans and R. Prattley beat S. Naylor and C. Scully, 6-4, 6-1. Final: Gowans and Prattley beat Shaw and O’Donnell, 6-3, 6-2. Girls’ Singles.—Semi-finals: E. Ogilvie beat L. Ashby (Christchurch), 6-1, 6-0; D. Smith (Canterbury) beat D.' Corich (Canterbury), 6-0, 5-6. 6-0. Final: E. Ogilvie beat D. Smith, 6-4, 6-2. Girls’ Doubles—Semi-finals: D. Corich and L. Ashby (Canterbury) beat L. Skerrett and P. Moffitt, 6-1, 6-0; E. Ogilvie and D. Smith beat S. Rich (Canterbury) and J. Anderson. 6-1, 6-1. Final: E. Ogilvie and D. Smith beat D. Corich and L. Ashby, 6-2, 6-4. Mixed Doubles. —Third round: Naylor and Miss Ogilvie beat O’Donnell and Miss Mac Duff, 9-2; Gowans and Miss Ashby beat Robertson and Miss Garth, 9-2; Prattley and Miss Smith beat Shaw and Miss Skerrett, 9-2; Watkins and Miss Corich beat Abbie and Miss Rich, 9-5. Semifinals: Naylor and Miss Ogilvie beat Gowans and Miss Ashby, 6-3, 6-5; Watkins and Corich beat Prattley and Miss Smith, 6-3, 6-4. Final: Watkins and Miss Corich beat Naylor and Miss Ogilvie, 6-3, 6-4. Under 19 Years The only event in the under-19 section, to be played on a knockout basis was the girls’ singles. Other events were played on a tournament basis, with each competitor playing a certain number of games, and those with the best record playing off in the final.
