DUNEDIN FIRE INQUIRY
Commission Set Up

Judge E. F. Rothwell, on furlough from the High Court of Western Samoa, has been appointed a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the fire which occurred in the premises of Arthur Barnett, Ltd., Dunedin, on December 9.
This was announced today by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Anderton), who said it was expected the inquiry would begin as soon as preliminary formalities could be completed. The Minister said the order of reference would be to inquire into:—The cause and origin of the fire; whether any special circumstances contributed to the origin or spread of the fire; the effectiveness or otherwise of the measures taken to deal with the fire; the adequacy of the water supply available to the fire brigade for fire-fighting; and generally such matters as may come to the commission’s notice which it is considered should be investigated and any matters affecting the premises which it is considered should be brought to the attention of the Government.
