G.C.A. GEAR FOR McMURDO

A ground control approach radar system was part of the cargo of a Globemaster transport plane which arrived in Christchurch from the United States yesterday morning. The equipment was described as "back-up gear.” It is intended for the air facility at McMurdo Sound, according to a United States Navy task force spokesman. The equipment will be taken to the Antarctic aboard the American supply ship Arneb which is now at Lyttelton. The Arneb was to have put to sea yesterday but was held to enable the equipment to be loaded.

At the same time, other loading has been taking place on the vessel—a consignment of 1000 drums of aviation fuel which the Navy purchased in Christchurch for Antarctic operations. To load this has meant considerable reorganisation of the Arneb's stowage this week. A tanker, the Alatna, has already taken one load of fuel south and is due back in Lyttelton on Sunday to have pumped aboard another bulk load to be carried to the Ross Sea.
