CONSUMER PRICE INDEX
Slight Reduction In December Retail prices fell 4 points, or 0.3 per cent., 1 in the fourth quarter of 1959. The Government Statistician, announcing that the all groups consumer price index fell from 1154 to 1150 (1955 equals 1000) between the third quarter, said that price falls representing 11} points resulted from the reduced taxation on beer, cigarettes, tobacco and petrol. Beef, bacon and ham prices rose, as did costs of home ownership, and motor repairs.
Food prices rose 8 points in December, the monthly index of food prices show's. Meat and fish prices fell 12 points and fruits, vegetables and eggs rose 45 points.
