FEWER SHIPS FOR WHEAT TRADE
While the South Island expected to become self-supporting for wheat this year, the Union Steam Ship Company will reduce the number of ships normally used in the Australian wheat trade, Mr H. H. Dobie, the chairman of the company, said in his annual report. It was usual for five vessels to be employed in the wheat trade, he said, but with the increased production in the South Island the number of ships would be cut to three this year. The other vessels would be used in other trade, he said.
