AUSTRALIAN WAGES

Basic Pay Rise To Be Sought (N.Z Press Association— Copyright> MELBOURNE, January 20. An average rise in the basic wage of at least 17s a week—and possibly £l—will be sought soon by the Australian Council of Trade Unions. An application will be made through the Metal Trades Unions to the Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Commission in time for a hearing to start next month.

The claim for a 17s rise is based mainly on an amount which the unions claim the country can afford through increased productivity. It also includes an amount which, it is estimated, workers are losing through the discontinuance of automatic cost-of-living adjustments. To the figure of 17s claimed will be added any increase in the cost of living shown in the statistics for the December quarter of last year.
