PRESIDENT OF U.S.S.R.
Voroshilov In India
(Rec. 11.15 p.m.) NEW DELHI, January 20.
The Soviet President, Marshal Klimenti Voroshilov, accompanied by an entourage of 74, arrived in New Delhi today on a 16-day visit.
He was met by the Indian Prime Minister (Mr Nehru) and the Indian President (Dr. Prasad). In his suite are Mr Frol Kozlov, a First Deputy Prime Minister, and Mrs Ekaterina Furtseva, the only woman member of the Soviet Communist Party presidium.
On his arrival at Palam airport, Marshal Voroshilov was given the same ceremonial welcome as that accorded President Eisenhower on his visit six weeks ago. The Soviet party drove in state along the 13-mile route followed by President Eisenhower on his triumphal drive from the airport. Political circles consider the visit important for three reasons. It will be the first close contact between Indian and Soviet leaders since India’s troubles with China started along her Himalayan border last autumn. It will provide an opportunity for discussion of India’s third five-year plan, for which the Soviet Union has already offered aid.
It will counterbalance to some extent the effect of President Eisenhower’s visit.
Marshal Voroshilov’s programme in Delhi leaves ample time for talks with Mr Nehru, which are expected to clear the way for the visit of the Soviet Prime Minister (Mr Khrushchev) while on his way to Indonesia.
