Railway Refreshment Charges
Sir,—During the holidays I travelled to and from Timaru. At Ashburton railway station, I was charged 8d for a cup of coffee. Would you consider this charge excessive? Would it be a fit subject for inquiry by pricefixing authorities?—Yours, etc., S. ANN. January 12, 1960.
[A spokesman for the Department of Inustries and Commerce in Christchurch said that charges at railway refreshment rooms (as with meals generally) were not subject to control under the Control of Prices Act. He understood, however, from inquiries which had been made, that the charge of 8d was standard for stations outside Christchurch, and had been set some years ago.]
