SEWERAGE SCHEMES FOR NEW SUBDIVISION AREAS

Sewerage proposals for subdivisions being made beyond the present sewer outfalls were examined by the Christchurch Drainage Board yesterday after being reported on in detail by the board’s policy committee. The first area was one north of Winters road, between the Main North road and Grirnseys road, which will involve almost 160 building lots and 70 chains of roading. The subdividers proposed that as the sewering of the area would involve the construction of a pumping station in a position which could tie in with the board’s planning for the area, they should be allowed to build a pumping station and rising main from Grirnseys road, along Winters road, to the Main North road. They were prepared for the design, specifications and construction of both at the cost of the board. They also asked the board to consider extending the rising main to the sewer to be constructed this year. The pumping station would be close to where the board would ultimately need one for the whole area, the committee said, and the subdividers’ proposals were acceptable only on the basis of the installation of a pumping station and rising main of sufficient capacity for the whole area. As the board had no loan authority for the reticulation of the area, the whole cost would have have to be borne by the subdividers. However, when the reticulation of the area generally was done by the board a refund could be made to the subdividers of the extra cost of the pumping station and rising main through the board’s insistence on a capacity beyond the immediate needs of subdivision. |

Subdividers of Skertons block on the Main South road and Shands road were given permission to install a septic tank unit, provided soakage in the area is satisfactory. The area will be rated in the normal way, with the board assuming responsibility for maintenance of the system.

Hornby septic tanks were already working to f'- capacity, and could not take any additional load, said the committee in a report on a request for a Formans road. Hornby, subdivision of 40 to 50 sections. The subdividers sought to have the sewers disHornby housing settlement’s recharge into the neighbouring ticulation system, which discharges into a septic tank. The committee added the other possibilities were being examined.

A Halswell road subdivision comprised about 140 sections, 50 of which were ready for building on, the committee said. The subdividers wished to install a sewerage system; but as no outfall to the board’s system was available the board was asked to approve a system of independent disposal. Provided soakage was satisfactory, the board agreed to septic tank disposal, with rating and board maintenance.

In the case of the new high school at Hillmorten to be built this year for occupation in 1961, the board approved the installation of a temporary pumping station and sewer main to connect to the board's main. No sewer outfall is available and the area is unsuitable for septic tanks.
