SHIP DAMAGED BY WHALE

Russian Chaser In Wellington (New Zeaiana Press Association' WELLINGTON, January 19. It was not the ice this time but the flurry of a huge fin whale in its death agony that damaged the propeller of the Russan whalecatcher Besposhchadni and sent her on a six-day journey from the Antarctic to Wellington for repairs. Because of the excessive vibration set up by the damage to her four-bladed propeller, the Besposhchadni was towed all the way by another whale-catcher, the Slava. The tow was cast off outside Pencarrow Head and the crippled ship arrived in the harbour under her own power early to-day. The mishap occurred on January 11 after the Besposhchadni had shot and was playing a 75ft fin whale. Suddenly the dying whale dived under the stern of the ship and struck the propeller, breaking one of the four blades. The whale was secured a little later.
