COAL UTILISATION COMMITTEE
Council To Seek
Meeting At the suggestion of the Mayor (Mr J. Watson) the Westport Borough Council decided at its monthly meeting last evening to ask the Government to call a meeting of the Coal Utilisation Committee of which he is a member. The Mayor explained that the council had been very interested in a report on coal utilisation prepared by Professor I. Graham, but it had apparently been shelved as the committee had not met since last June.
“It is not good to hear of a large sum being allocated to repair or improve the Waitaki dam while coal stations could be provided at less cost in the Buller to feed ample power into the State grid at only .02 of a penny per unit more than the charge for hydro,” added the Mayor. He spoke of the many industrial projects being talked about, with an estimated £46,000,000 to be spent in the Auckland district alone, and compared that progress with the lack of developments on the West Coast, especially Buller.
