CRICKET Outright Victory For Central At Auckland

(Aew Zeaiana Press Association)

AUCKLAND, January 19.

Central Districts secured the first of the three outright wins it needs to win the Plunket Shield when it beat Auckland at Eden Park today with 79 runs and 63 minutes to spare. Central Districts will start its next match against Northern Districts at Hamilton on Thursday.

A magnificent partnership of 133 runs for the last wicket by G. A. Bartlett, 99 not out, and I. A. Colquhoun 32 and D. D. Beard’s equally magnificent bowling gave Auckland no chance of trying for victory today.

Bartlett’s baiting was superb, full of strong wellstroked drives and several excellent hooks and cuts, and it was a tragedy that he was unable to reach his century. Colquhoun called him for a short run which would have been his hundredth, except that Colquhoun was narrowly run out and in trying to make the crease he fell awkwardly and pulled a hamstring muscle.

But the two had done irreparable damage to Auckland, for their 100-minute stand took the score from 154 to 287 and Auckland was left the difficult task of scoring 284 for victory in 307 minutes. In its previous four innings on Eden Park Auckland had only once scored over 200— 201 against Wellington last week —and there seemed little chance of its succeeding against the strong Central Districts attack.

for 54 runs and this valuable knock saved Auckland from an early collapse. He had a lot of luck, but was undismayed by the edges he got from the spinners. J. T. Sparling played well, briefly. D. Taylor hit several fine boundaries before he was out to a tired-looking drive and A. W. Ritchie again produced a bright knock late in the day. But at no stage did Auckland look as if it could force a victory.

Central Districts had an immediate setback when it was found that Bartlett had a sore heel and was able to bowl only brief spells- This placed a great strain on D. D. Beard, but the 40-year-old responded nobly. He bowled almost throughout the innings—43 of the 93 overs bowled —and had the astonishing figures of six wickets for 57 runs with 21 maidens. He gave the batsmen no peace at all and if all the catches had been taken he might well have gained more wickets. The Auckland batting, with one or two exceptions, was undistinguished. S. G.
