Athletics REQUIREMENTS FOR RECORDS
Otago Centre’s Discussion
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 19.
Concerned about the number of national record-breaking performances this season which will not be allowed for various technical reasons. the Otago Amateur Athletic Centre decided at its meeting last night to bring the matter to the attention of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association.
Centre delegates supported the motion of Dr. N. R. Jefferson, who, noting the many records which have had to be dismissed due to minor technicalities, suggested that a letter be sent to the management committee of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, asking it to get in touch with the various centres and impress on them the requirements for records.
Dr. Jefferson claimed that some of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association requirements for records seemed unnecessary.
"At Lower Hutt recently a long jumper broke a record which could not be claimed because the event was handicapped. Yet that athlete, a scratch competitor, was competing under exactly the same conditions and jumping from the same board as if it had been a scratch competition,” said Dr. Jefferson.
The Otago centre has been advised that all the outside athletes invited to the Dunedin festival athletic meeting on January 30 have accepted. They include D. Wilson (Australia). J. Taylor (Auckland), R. Johns (West Coast. North Island), L. Heenan (Southland), and Miss V. Morgan (Waikato).
