EQUIPMENT AT SCHOOLS

Concern At Shortages

“Nothing is more frustrating to a teacher than trying to work with inadequate equipment,” said Mrs J. A. Walsh (Te Kuiti) at today’s meeting of the national executive of the New Zealand Educational Institute. Teachers in primary schools were concerned that when schools reopened they would be faced with shortages of some essential supplies.

Most serious of the impending deficiencies will be infant readers, arithmetic text books for Forms I and 11, and art and craft materials.

The problem has been represented by the executive to the Education Department, which has replied that shortages should be only temporary. The shortages of art and craft materials are due to import difficulties, while the text books will soon be ready for distribution. A new Form I arithmetic text book is to be issued in 1960, and 1961 will see the introduction of a new Form II book.
