DX LEAGUE MEETING
Listening At Leithfield
About 40 amateur radio operators with eight radio receiving sets tuned up to their maximum sensitivity will gather on Leithffeld beach on February 13 and 14. They will be attending the annual convention of the DX League in New Zealand. The convention, apart from a two-hour break for official business on Saturday night will be devoted entirely to listening to radio broadcasts. Included in the break will be quiz sessions designed to test the league members’ knowledge of radio stations throughout the world. “The aim in DX work is to see how many stations on the standard and broadcast bands we can get,” Mr W. D. Reed, secretary of the Christchurch branch of the league said yesterday. “Radio stations are always interested in knowing how well they are being received and we write to stations in all parts of the world telling them that we have picked up their programmes,” Mr Reed said. He showed a case full of letters and cards from radio stations in many countries confirming the reports and thanking him for his interest.
Special Purposes “Sometimes,” Mr Reed said, /he league is organised for special purposes. One example was in toe Korean war when the list of prisoners broadcast by Radio Reking was picked up better in New Zealand than it was in America. We kept listening to Radio Peking constantly at that tone. Sometimes the notification We sent to the United States was ™e first news some parents had oftheir sons whereabouts. “One of our members, Mr Arthur T. Cushen. was awarded toe Coronation Medal for his Work at this time,” Mr Reed said. Mr Reed explained that most of the sets used by members of toe league were ordinary comtoercial sets tuned to high sensibly. A few members only had oommunication receivers similar to those used in the air force, -toe high tuning and the long trials made the long-distance reCe |l‘ ri g Possible. The convention will finish about Jla-m. on Sunday after the mem?ors have spent the night listening.
