FLOODS IN MOROCCO
Bad Weather In Europe
RABAT (Morocco), Jan. 19. Three thousand persons are reported to be homeless, railway communications are cut and 500 square miles of cultivated land are under water after flooding in the Rharb plain, north-western Morocco, at the week-end. Torrential rain in the Atlas mountains caused the flooding. In Eastern Greece, flood warnings have been issued after heavy rain and warnings from Bulgarian authorities that a huge volume of water is flowing southward into Greece.
Early this morning the river Maritsa, which forms the GreekTurkish border, began to spill over its banks, causing minor flooding in surrounding areas. Army units on the border and in Salonika have been ordered to stand by to render assistance if necessary. Jugoslav road and rail traffic has been badly disrupted by heavy snowfall in nearly all parts of the country in the last 24 hours.
Deep drifts stopped traffic on roads leading to Austria and Italy, and barges on the Danube and other rivers were stopped. At least 131 persons were today reported missing in a 100 m.p.h. blizzard which has lashed the seas off Japan. Another 52 were reported dead after their ships sank in the heavy seas. Four vessels with crews totalling 59 are missing, while on land, there were 14 confirmed deaths.
