AUSTRALIANS’ HEAVY BUYING BRINGS SALE RECORD

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, January 19. Heavy buying by a big band of Australians today gave the 34th National Sale of yearlings a recordbreaking start. Today’s average of 916|gns is a record for any one day in the history of the sales. This average was gained through the sale of 133 yearlings for an aggregate of 121,865gn5. Another record was the average of 22834gns for 12 yearlings in a splendid draft from the Trelawney Stud. The 12 colts from Trelawney realised 27,400gns and one of them changed hands at 5000gns, which has never been bettered and only once equalled in the history of the sales. A Melbourne trainer, J. Mulcahy, went to 5000gns for a colt by Marco Polo II from the Foxbridge mare, Chubin. The only other in the history of the sales to bring that figure was Dalray’s half-brother, Dalstar, which was bought by Mr C. Neville.

The top colt was one of three youngsters Mulcahy bought for Mr A. H. Griffiths, a Melbourne textile manufacturer. Mr Griffiths is attending the sale for the first time, but he has had a fair amount of success with New Zealand-bred horses and others. Interest Apparent Overseas interest in this year’s sale was apparent from the start of today’s selling. The first in the catalogue, a brown colt by Lucky Bag from Treaty bred at Riccarton by the late Mr Fred Armstrong, was bought for 1500 gns on behalf of Mr J. de Blois Wark, who races a big team of horses in California. Mr William Read, a New Zealand-born man who has extensive oil and real estate interests overseas, bought four youngsters for 4300gns but whvn most of the top lots same into the ring the Australians all but dominated the scene. Forty head changed hands today for four-figures and 26 of them will go to Australia. The leading Randwick trainer, T. J. Smith, made seven purchases for his clients, making an outlay of 15,100gns. Altogether the Australians bought 69 yearlings today for 75,425gn5. The average price of the Australian purchases was 1093 gns. The average for the 64 other yearlings bought today was 725 gns. Mr G. J. Barton, of Dunedin, made the biggest individual outlay of any New Zealand owner at today’s sale. Mr Barton paid 2700gns for one of the Trelawney draft. This was a brown colt by Khorassan from the unraced Sajakeda mare Mokoia, a half-sister to the good winners Te Totara and Te Awa and a daughter of Te Hinemoa, an outstanding winner. T. J. Smith, who was underbidder on the colt that brought 500Cgns, bought the Irst of the Trelawney draft for 3000gns. This was a half-brother to Santiago, winner of nine races. This youngster was one of four in the draft sired by Marco Polo 11. Macdougal. winner of the Melbourne and Brisbane Cups and the A.J.C. Metropolitan last year, is a son of Marco Polo 11, so intense Australian interest in his stock at this year’s sale is hardly surprising.

Alton Lodge was next best to Trelawney in stud averages today. Four from Alton Lodge brought 7850gns, at an average of 1962igns. Striking Chestnut One of three colts from Alton Lodge this year was a striking chestnut colt by Chatsworth II from the Avondale Guineas winner Estimate. Frank Dalton went to 3500gns to get this colt for a client of his Randwick stable. Alton Lodge also supplied the top-priced filly to-day. This was a daughter of Chatsworth II and the Gold Nib mare Cairness She brought 1300gns and was one of Mr William Read’s purchases. Like Mr Read’s other purchases to-day, she will enter the Hastings stable of J. P. Ryan but will later go to Australia. Third best in the stud averages to-day was Flaxbourne, with 1437Jgns from the sale of four yearlings for 5750gns. Next was the Blenheim Sevenoaks Stud, which sent forward six yearlings which changed hands at 7000gns for an average First in the draft from Sevenoaks owned by Mrs E. D. Goulter, was a chestnut colt by Faux Tirage from Quite Nice. Mr M Groagan, of Matamata, went to 2400gns to secure this neat colt for a Sydney owner. Another in the Sevenoaks draft to bring 2400gns was a good-look-ing. well-grown Balloch-Marito colt. His new owner is Mrs A. E. Rush, of Palmerston North. Few For Canterbury Only a handful of yearlings seen to-day will go into Canterbury stables. One will be a Khorassan-Bhss-ful Lady colt bought for 1050gns by Mr E. Rutherford of Parnassus, a client of I. McClure's Riccarton stable. Mr D. W. J. Gould, of Christchurch, paid 900gns for a chestnut colt by Fair’s Fair from the Gold Nib mare Princess Tui. Mr Gould’s horses are trained at Riccarton by J. C. Tomkinson. Captain A. D. Boyle, of Orari, to-day paid 900gns for a brown colt by Able Seaman from Neuform. Neuform won three races and her half-brother Gulliver won nine. They are progeny of Classform, which won the New Zealand Cup and 13 other races. Sales at 200gns or more were:— Gns.
