Mislaid Radium Capsule Found
(N.Z Press Association—Copynahti MELBOURNE, January 12. A dangerous radium capsule mislaid by a doctor last week was detected by a geiger counter yesterday in a load of baled waste paper. A doctor at Ballarat, 70 miles north-west of Melbourne, “lost” the capsule last Thursday. It contained 14 radium “needles” and exposure to it for half an hour could have caused serious injury. Police kept the capsule’s loss secret to avoid panic among townspeople. Police believed the capsule, worth £l4OO, had been carried away in a rubbish tin. A frantic search of Ballarat’s rubbish tips and dumps was made —but to no avail.
Then yesterday a detective had a bright idea the capsule may have been baled with waste paper and loaded on a truck for transport to Melbourne. It was detected at a municipal depot.
