ADDINGTON MARKET All Classes Of Store Stock In Demand

There was a sound demand for all classes of stock at the first of the special store lamb and sheep sales at Addington Market yesterday. Values generally remained close to late rates.

Store lambs were penned in theiv largest numbers this year—more than 15,000 head—and fat and forward sorts were keenly sought. Annual drafts from the tussock country which are starting to make their appearance were penned in sizeable lots and although many of the lambs were small, they were a healthy group.

Two-tooth ewes met a ready sale at current rates and a few lines of good five-year breeding ewes were quickly snapped up. Good wethers sold soundly at a slight advantage.

The offering of 18,890, with last week’s totals in parenthesis, comprised 15,169 lambs (6636), 698 twotooth ewes (812). 2345 older ewes (434) and 678 wethers (583). STORE LAMBS

The store lamb section opened on a quiet note but after the first alley there was a strengthening of the market which continued until the end. There was a sound demand for all classes with the main buying power concentrated on the lamb ready to go on to rape and which would fatten quickly. The plainer sorts needing some building up before fattening were also in demand but buyers tended to keep to a limit.

Quality was generally good, although there were more lambs in The smaller and plainer classes, and a fair proportion appeared dry and hard. There was a good attendance but many of those in the gallery were, not buying and were watching the market closely. Values for the better class of lamb held fairly well to late rates but the lighter sorts showed a slight easing of up to 2s a head. This applied particularly to the early drafts coming off the tussock which were in increased numbers. At times there appeared to be a slightly erratic tone but this was not marked. A pen of Corriedale wether lambs from R. G. Forbes (The Gums) sold at 42s and a second cut made 395. A. E. Birdling (Birdlings Flat) sold 108 Romney and English Leicester half-bred cross at 41s.
