Drought Breaks In Australia
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) ADELAIDE, January 12. Heavy rain in scattered parts of South Austrelia has broken the back of the State’s long drought. This was the brightest spot in Australia’s weather picture yesterday as soaking falls continued over areas which had had no rain for 18 to 20 months. The rain came close on the heels of heavy week-end falls. Last night Weather Bureau officers in Adelaide said the rain should continue for another two days. Hail, 50-mile-an-hour winds and heavy rain struck the northwest of Victoria yesterday. The tiny Mallee township of Torrita was drenched by more than 3in of rain in five hours. This was half its entire 1959 rainfall.
Scores of acres of ripening wheat about to be harvested were flattened by hail at properties several miles north.
