Committee Opposes Closing

The South Canterbury Health Camp committee, at a meeting held at Geraldine, unanimously agreed that so long as there were groups of children in the area needing treatment, the committee would continue to oppose the closing of the Geraldine Health Camp. The committee authorised its executive to again invite the chairman of the Christchurch Central Council of the Health Camp Federation to visit Timaru to address a public meeting, and to approach the Minister of Health on the question. It was also agreed to seek assistance from the City Council, the Trades and Labour Federation, the Chamber of Commerce, the National Council of Women, the Council of Churches and other organisations who would help. It was further agreed to seek legal opinion as to whether either the board or the Christchurch Council had the power to close the Geraldine camp. The South Canterbury committee also affirmed that it had no confidence in the chairman and other Christchurch deputising members of the board and as certained that they appeared to have acted unconstitutionally, that they had no mandate from the Christchurch Central Council to support the motion abolishing the Geraldine camp and that if the central council had been asked with proper notice of motion to grant this authority it would not have done so.
