T.E.A.L. Fares

Sir, Your correspondent “Economy” appears to be under some delusion both about fares and mileages in his recent letter on this subject. He quotes the Brisbane-Melbourne mileage as being nearly the same as SydneyAuckland. In fact, the comparative distances are 902 against 1342—nearly 50 per cent, more for the trans-Tasman journey. On this basis, his claim that T.E.A.L. fares are more than double Australian inter-State fares falls down, particularly when one thinks that there is an intermediate port within Australia to assist in greater seat utilisation. Also, for domestic operation, no return fare rebate is allowed—T.E.A.L. offer 10 per cent in these instances. Bearing in mind the differences between International and Domestic airline operation, so often explained through your columns, I feel “Economy” could better draw comparisons between domestic operations in Australia and New Zealand, where he possibly may have a more realistic argument— Yours, etc., FARE FED UP.
