MEMORIAL TO DOLPHIN

Statue Almost Finished

The statue of Opo, the Opononi dolphin, is almost finished. Mr Russell Clark, the Christchurch sculptor, who has been carving the monument free of charge for the Opo Memorial Committee, hopes to have it ready for the packers within a week. The carving is of Hinuera stone, which is a buff coloured material of rather coarse texture. This is the second time that Mr Clark has worked with this medium, the first occasion being the carving of the Maori anchor stones, which have now been set in- place in the forecourt of the Auckland Government buildings. “That was an easier job than the Opo statue,” said Mr Clark. He explained that because of the coarse texture of the stone, he was unable to put much detail into the 4ft 6in long statue of the small boy and the dolphin. The people of Opononi will pay for the transport of the monument to Opononi, where it will be set up near the beach where Opo used to play with children in the surf.
