TRAINING IN FORESTRY

N.Z. To Attend Conference

(blew Zeaiana Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 12. The Minister of Forests (Mr Tirikatene) will lead the New Zealand delegation to the fifth session of the Asia and Pacific Forestry Commission at New Delhi in February. Announcing this tonight, the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) said New Zealand had accepted an invitation from the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation to send a delegation to the conference, which is expected to last from February 8 to February 18. The New Zealand delegation will include two advisory officers from the New Zealand Forest Service. “New Zealand has been specially invited to attend this session of the commission because the F.A.O. is anxious to obtain our views on vocational training in forestry and forestry operations generally,” said Mr Nash “One of the two officers to accompany Mr Tirikatene will be chosen for his experience in training forestry field workers, and the other for his experience in forest management. “New Zealand assisted in the setting up of the commission in 1955 and, in view of the outstanding quality of our Forest Service, we are being asked to help now in shaping a regional programme of field training for forestry workers. “At a later stage New Zealand may assist in the implementation of this programme through the Colombo Plan, or the United Nations expanded programme of technical assistance. The progress made here in forestry training methods is highly regarded overseas,” Mr Nash said.
