A new electronic instrument designed to provide earlier and more accurate diagnosis of glaucoma, a leading cause of adult blindness, has been developed by University of California scientists. Operating on a basically new principle, the instrument requires no anaesthesia because of its gentleness and speed. Clinical models are now being built and should be available to eye examiners within a year, the university announcement said. The device, which measures pressure within the eyeball, is known as an electronic tonometer. With the cornea flattened, the pressure within the eye forces a tiny movable plate out of position. The plate is then automatically returned to its original position by electronic means. The device measures the amount of current needed to realign the plate, which is directly proportional to the amount of pressure within the eye. Hailstones Wanted (From a Reuter Correspondent) JOHANNESBURG. South African scientists have appealed to people, when it hails in Johannesburg, to pick up the stones and preserve them in their refrigerators, and then to advise Dr. S. Mossop, of Pretoria. He needs them urgently. For some time Dr. Mossop and other researchers at the National Physical Research laboratory of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, have been collecting hailstones for research. In his Pretoria laboratory, his collection is stored in a special deep-freeze compartment. There are hailstones as big as tennis balls —locked away in a vacuum flask in case the power fails and the hail melts. Last time it hailed in Johannesburg, Dr. Mossop visited several people in Johannesburg and managed to find 87 stones—collected from the refrigerators of housewives who “kept them to Prove that we weren’t spinning a yam to our husbands.” “Eventually we hope to find out something about the conditions suitable for hail, and once we know that, it may be Possible for us to work out a yay to influence hailstorms,” he said.
