First Innings Lead In Test

Worrell kept the England bowlers toiling unavailingly all today to add a record 384 for the West Indies fourth wicket and give them a first innings lead in the opening test. Sobers (218) and Worrell (177) were still together tonight at the end of the fifth day of play—lo hours and a half after they came together on Friday. They have taken the West Indies score from 102 to 486 —four runs more than England scored in their first innings The partnership was the highest for any wicket by West Indies test batsmen—beating the 338 for the third wicket set by Worrell and E. Weekes at Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, in 1953-54 The previous best stand for the fourth wicket, 283 at Nottingham, in 1950, was also held by Worrell and Weekes.

The only definite chance given by either man today came shortly after lunch when Worrell, with his score at 109, was dropped off R. Illingworth by M. C.
