Huge Skate Caught

An amateur fisherman, Mr W. Pearce, of Weymouth, near Auckland, was fishing from the launch Awatea last week when he hauled in the biggest skate ever to come out of the Manukau harbour. It weighed more than Bcwt. The fish fought for an hour and a half and towed the four-ton launch a mile and a half. Normally skate caught in the harbour are around 301 b to 501 b. The big skate measured Bft 6in from its head to the tip of its tail, and it is sft Bin across to the ends of its flippers.—(P.A.)
