Second Drop From 70,000ft

A United States Air Force captain made his second drop in a month from more than 70.000 ft today, falling nearly 10 miles before his parachute opened at 17,500 ft. Captain Joe Kittinger went over the side of the gondola of a balloon at 74,700 ft today, compared with his 76,400 ft drop bn November 16. It was the latest in a series of experiments to test a man’s psychological and bodily reactions to falls from great heights. An Air Force spokesman said Captain Kittinger dropped 55 000 ft in 3min 40sec, with only a ’ 6ft parachute to stabilise his fall, before his main, 28ft parachute opened.
