Monk’s Attempt At Cremation
BANGKOK, Dec. 9.
Bangkok police today seized a yellow-robed Chinese Buddhist monk as he was about to cremate himself on a blazing pyre, American Associated Press said.
Squatting cross-legged with eyes ■ closed in meditation, the monk was carried to a police jeep from beside the sft pile of wood. Police said the monk, Poh Kwong, was despondent over the loss of money intended for hospital charities. He refused to answer their questions. The “Bangkok Post” said the monk had collected money for charity which he gave to a Chinese merchant for delivery. When he learned the charities had not received the funds, he announced he intended public cremation. The “Post” said the merchant had handed over the money to a reporter for a Chinese newspaper closed by police last year.
