SHOP-LIFTING BY JUVENILES
Dunedin Retailers Tighten Policy (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, December '4. A new “get-tough” policy on juvenile shop-lifters has been announced by the Otago Retailers’ Association. Retailers say that because the offence has reached such high proportions among school children, the offenders will in future be handed over to the police. The secretary of the association (Mr W. P. Wellington) said today that in the past the attitude of many retailers was to issue admonishment. So many children repeated the offence, however, that it was decided that a change of attitude was necessary. "It is obvious that an example has to be made of the offenders as a deterrent,” said Mr Wellington.
