First Delivery By s City Firm j i The first heavy duty fork lift - truck to be built in New Zealand f and delivered for use was handed J over yesterday by the manufac- ■ turers, Andrews and Beaven, Ltd, i at the Blenheim road store of the 1 New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., which has i bought the truck for use, there. This truck, an electric battery > model, weighs about 35001 b and is • caoable of lifting a load of up to 20001 b., It has a large safety ’ margin and is foolproof in operation. . Mr M. W. Beaven. managing . director of the manufacturing company, gave delivery of the , machine and it was taken over ’ on behalf of the purchaser by the Christchurch manager, Mr R. H. Cranfield. A programme for manufacturing these trucks had been under consideration for some time but it developed more quickly because of import controls. The company • proposes to manufacture seven ' different models, electric battery, i petrol and diesel, from lifts of : 15001 b up to 60001 b. Twelve of these trucks have been completed and within a week i the twenty-fifth will be going on the assembly line, yhere is a Dominion-wide demand for them. The manufacture pf these trucks here was first proposed by Mr W. B. Barnes, a director of Andrews and Beaven, Ltd. The company
send Mr M. Jauncey, one of Its engineers, overseas to study their design and manufacture. The trucks were all built under licence to overseas manufacturers.
