ANTARCTIC FISH
Blood Colour Of Water A Russian scientist has reported the existence of Antarctic fish with blood the same colour as water. “As is known,” says the biologist, Alexander Andriyashev, “the blood of all fish is red owing to the presence of a large number of red corpuscles containing haemoglobin, the respiratory element of blood. Some Antarctic fish, the blood of which is colourless and almost as transparent as water are a striking exception.” Specimens of these fish were observed by Soviet scientists aboard the laboratory ship Ob in Antarctic waters near the Kerguelan Archipelago. Three different species of white-blooded fish were caught on this trip and a dozen other species, including some extremely rare fish, were captured during the second and third Soviet expeditions to the Antarctic.—(U.N.E.S.C.O.).
