OFFICIAL REPORT

The official report issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association, in conjunction with the Woolbuyers’ Association and the Wool Commission of New Zea'and, states: “The second main sale of the 1959-60 season was held in Christchurch yesterday when five catalogues. totalling 33,565 bales, were submitted. “The offering was mostly drawn from the Canterbury and Marlborough districts, but the West Coast, Nelson and Chatham Islands were also represented. The offering was a mixed one with many attractive lines especially among the halfbred and Corriedale clips, but the : coarser qualities were a little disappointing and a fair percentage of i these were more or less dusty and discoloured as well as showing lack of character and length. The bulk lof the offering was rather heavier |in condition than is usual at this sale. However, considering the near drought conditions which have ruled in many districts the average showing was well up to expectation and a satisfactory feature was the comparative absence of yolk stain. Piece wools opened up well on the whole and were well up to the standard for this sale. “There was the usual full bench of buyers and the sale opened very firmly with keen and general competition for almost all classes of wool. Tire Continent was again to the fore and took a large precentage of the finer fleece and piece wools. Bradford buyers were rather more active than at the last sale, while both Japan and East Europe were in the market for suitable lots. Some of the best fine wools were bought on behalf of the local mills. ‘As compared with the recent Wellington sale three-quarterbred and crossbred wools can be quoted as in sellers’ favour, while halfbreds and Corriedales were fully 2J per cent higher than at the Christchurch October sale, with the best lots up to 5 per cent, dearer. Merino wool was again rather irregular, but showed little actual change from the previous sale. All classes of piece wools sold freely at an advance of fully 2J per cent. There was almost a complete clearance at auction. The following was the range of prices
