SHOALS FOUND BY LACHLAN

Area In Taranaki Bight (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 2. Suspicions of extensive shoals in the South Taranaki Bight, extending south from Cape Egmont to a point off Wanganui, had been confirmed by the Royal New 'Zealand Navy's survey ship Lachlan, the Navy Department announced today. The Lachlan, which is surveying the" area, has reported that the shoals are within 60ft of the surface. In addition rock pinnacles, rising to within 30ft, have been found up to four miles off shore in an area . extending from Wanganui south to the Whangaehu river. Charts covering this area are based on soundings which are now a century old and are noted with the suspicion that the shoals and pinnacles exist. The Lachlan’s re-survey has established this fact, but it is not considered that they constitute a major danger to navigation as apart from their depth, they are off the main shipping routes.
