CALIFORNIA GROWS

20m People By 1970? NEW YORK. California is expected to become the most heavily-popu-lated State in the Union by 1970, according to statisticians of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. They said California was expected to add more than 6 million people by that time, which would bring its population to over 20 million and put it ahead of New York. The population of the United States as a whole, including the new States of Hawaii and Alaska, is expected to reach 208 million by 1970. This meant a population increase of 1.5 per cent, an average for each of the next 10 years. They foresaw that the chief production age group—18 to 64 years of age—would increase in size most slowly in that time, with an increase of about a fifth to 115 million. The over-65 group was expected to grow by a third to about 19 million, and the under-18’s by about a quarter to 74 million.
