BARMAIDS WANTED IN HOTELS
Nelson Chamber Of Commerce Suggestion (Neto Zealand Press Association) NELSON, December 2. The Nelson Chamber of Commerce favours an extension of the hours for the sale of alcoholic liquor, and the reintroduction of barmaids. At its meeting last night the chamber decided to forward these views to the Associated Chambers of Commerce for ti eir submissions to the Parliamentary Select Committee investigating the sale of liquor. The views were incorporated in a letter on licensing matters from Mr J. A. Harley, a member of the Nelson chamber, and president of the Brewers’ Association of New Zealand.
Commenting on his letter, Mr Harley said there was a growing demand for the dine, dance, and liquor type of entertainment. He felt the licensee of a hotel should be able to sell liquor for any nine hours he liked to 10 p.m. Such a move would be welcome to country areas. He was also in favour of the reintroduction of barmaids. Barr ids were cleaner, and tended to set a higher tone in the bars. The chamber adopted Mr Harley’s views opposing the appointment of Justices of the Peace on licensing committees as against the present type of committee elected by citizens, and presided over by a Magistrate. Mr Harley contended the proposed system would foster bureaucratic control.
