WOOL SALES AT NEWCASTLE

Market Firm; Good Clearance (NJi. Press Association —Copyright) NEWCASTLE, December 2. The market was firm at the Newcastle wool sales today with all descriptions of Merino, comebacks and crossbreds moving in sellers’ favour. There was strong competition from Japan, the Continent and the United Kingdom. Of the 18,351 bales offered, there was a clearance of 18,220. Crossbred prices: Good to average 56’s, 69d; good average 58’s, 69d; good average 60’s, 73d. Higher Gold Returns From Dredges (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, December 2. The returns from the two dredges operated by Gold Mines of New Zealand, Ltd., for November were the highest for. some time. The yield of 2223 ounces of bullion by the Kaniere dredge was easily the highest returned since it was removed from Kaniere to its present site at Greenstone in the Teremakau settlement. The previous best yield was 1926 ounces for October. The yield of 1638 ounces by the Arahura dredge, which operates in the Arahura valley, was its highest for some considerable time. The figures were as follows: Kaniere 2223 ounces of bullion from 306,000 yards of material excavated in 501 hours; Arahura 1638 ounces of bullion from 282,000 yards of material excavated in 485 hours. TINWALD The store sheep entry at the Tinwald sale on Tuesday was a small one, with prices much the same as last week. The best of the wether hoggets made from 29s to 345, medium 24s to 29s and culls 19s to 235. Romney ewe hoggets in good condition made up to 475. The best finewoolled ewe hoggets made up to 35s 6d. The fat sheep yarding was similar in size to that of last week, with prices being firm to a shade better, except in the closing stages, where values were incluined to be erratic. Values were:— Ewes: prime, 12s Id to Ids id; medium, 8s Id to Us Id; light, 5s Id to 7s Id. Hoggets: prime, 43s Id to 48s Id; medium, 38s id to 42s Idlight, 33s Id to 37s Id. Wethers; prime, 40s Id to 44s Id; medium, 34s Id to 39s id; light. 28s Id to 33s id.
