ADDINGTON MARKET Slack Sale For Store Sheep; Fat Cattle Cheaper

Store sheep had a slack sale at Addington market yesterday. Wethers were particularly hard to quit and the bulk of the Chatham Island sheep brought forward were passed in. The best of the hoggets sold about late rates but inferior sorts were easier. Store cattle also showed a general decline of about 30s a head. A general soaking sain to revive feed in the province is needed to give lifedo these markets. After starting on a par with late rates steers eased by up to 50s a head in the course of the fat cattle sale. Cows were cheaper throughout. Fat sheep met an erratic sale with values over all not showing very much alteration. After a slow start fat lambs picked up to sell about late rates.

STORK SHEEP For a medium-sized entry of store sheep of mixed quality the sale was by no means a buoyant one. A big part of the gallery was in the spectator class, and by the time the sale of a further offering of Chatham Island wethers was reached most of the sale followers had dispersed. These sheep were difficult to sell at all in face of negligible competition. Until there is a worthwhile rain the outlook for store sheep is not very bright. The entry totalled 3711 head, compared with 3455 last week, and included 2411 hoggets, 217 ewes and lambs, and 1083 wethers. The hogget offering included some quite attractive entries of both ewe wether hoggets mainly off Banks Peninsula, and for these values were generally about in line with late rates. For secondary and plainer sorts, however, .values were fairly modest and looked to be a shade cheaper. The best of the Romney and fine wool ewe hoggets brought from about 41s to 48s, with average sorts at 35s to 39s 6d, and plain at 25s to 30s. The section was topped by S. J. McP. Stewart ( Barrys Bay), with 160 Romney ewe hoggets selling at 48s. Seventy-five Corriedale ewe hoggets from E. R. Wright (Hawarden), the tops of a line of 166 of the same breed from J. Martin (Seafield), and 76 Romneys from Purau Station, Ltd. (Purau), were next in order, selling at 465. The best of the wether hoggets sold from about 32s to 37 s, but there were more sales in between, about 20s and 295. T. A. Howell (Bumham) and Purau Station, Ltd., headed the sale, with Romneys making to 375. Sales of hoggets were made as follows:

New Zealand Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Association, Ltd., sold: on account of Ashburton client, 68 Romney ewe hoggets at 375: Eskvale Station. Ltd., 217 ewe hoggets at 30s to 335, and 44 wether hoggets at 26s to 295; Worner and Young (Southbridge), 82 hoggets at 15s. Dalgety and Company sold: on account of S. J. McP. Stewart (Barrys Bay), 258 Romney ewe hoggets at 30s to 48s; E. R. Wright (Hawarden), 75 Corriedale ewe hoggets at 465; clients, 100 hoggets at 20s 6d to 31s. , Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., sold; on account of F. Parker and Son (Clarence Bridge), 43 wether hoggets at 21s 6d, 42 ewe hoggets at 23s 6d; Birch Hill Station (Rangiora), 95 ewe hoggets at 17s to 265; clients, 100 wether hoggets at 225, 128 wether hoggets at 345; T. A. Howell (Burnham). 38 Romney wether hoggets at 375, 43 ewe hoggets at 345; J. Martin (Seafield), 166 Corriedale ewe hoggets at 40s to 465; Purau Station, Ltd. (Purau). 166 wether hoggets at 129 s to 375; 22 Romney ewe hoggets at 37s 6d to 465; B. Chambers (Lees-

ton), 48 wether hoggets at 265. National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd., and H. Matson and Company sold: on account of Munning Bros. (Kaiapoi), 63 halfbred ewe hoggets at 255; I. Marshall (Christchurch), 34 halfbred wether hoggets at 29s 6d; M. Jacobs (Kaiapoi), 65 wether hoggets at 18s to 25s 6d; Temuka client, 35 hoggets at 30s. In the adult sheep section, the bulk of the offering was made up of Chatham Island wethers. The trouble here was that there were hardly any buyers offering for these, and a high percentage of them had to be passed in. Still for the few island wethers that were sold prices were somewhere near late rates, with four-tooths from Barker Bros, selling at 26s 6d to 28s. Wether sales included:— Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., sold: on account of Barker Bros. (Chatham Islands), 192 two-shear Romney wethers at 26s 6d to 28s. New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency sold: on account of C. Preece (Chatham Islands), 97 two and three-shear wethers at 25s to 25s 6d. A few ewes and lambs were offered, but apart from one pen they were all in small lots. A pen of woolly ewes ■with quite good Down lambs at foot brought 21s all counted. The balance of the offering comprised shorn ewes and lambs which made' from Ils for hoggets, with lambs to 15s 6d. Among sales were: National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd., and H. Matson and Company sold: on account of A. C. Clark (Halswell), 24 ewes and lambs at 12s. New Zealand Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Association, Ltd., sold: on account of E. T. Suckling (Oxford), 87 ewes and 78 lambs at 21s. The sale for fat lambs was on the whole a good one. The entry at 748 head was more than double the 1 size oi last week's varding, but quality was probably not so good over all, although some very good lambs were again included. At the opening of the sale prices looked to be slightly easier, but as the sale went along values tended to pick up again to close to last week's rates. H. and F. McCrostie (Ashburton)

topped the lamb sale With a sale of one lamb at 60s 7d and for four they averaged 52s Id. An undisclosed vendor from Ashburton district sold ID at up to- 52s Id and a North Canterbury client realised up to 49s Id for 17. Values were;—

FAT SHEEP The market for both fat wethers and ewes tended to be rather erratic. The offering totalled 4463, compared with 2920 a week ago, and Was of variable quality, with some 'good wethers included. Taking into account the erratic tendency in the wether market with good medium sheep sometimes looking 2s to 3s better and at other times barely up to late rates, the sale could probably be quoted at about in line with late rates for the better quality sheep. The best of the four-tooth wethers also sold reasonably well, but once again over-fat and aged wethers encountered a depressed sale. Also in an erratic sale, ewes sold from on a par with late rates to Is to Is 6d Cheaper, with the market tending to get a little more difficult as the sale progressed. Except In odd cases, the overfat and tallowy ewes were difficult to sell. Woolly wethers from B. T. Grofski (Ohoka) sold up to 68s Id. Otherwise, R. J. Southgate (Oxford) realised up to 61s Id for the tops of 27. and G J. and E. J. Francis (Halswell) made to 60s Id for two. Sales at 58s Id were made by J. J. Wyllie (Omihi) for nine and by T. E. M. Brooks (Brookside) for 14. Among the older ewes, Derrett Bros. (Hororata) sold 13 at 26s Id and sales at 24s Id were made by E. C. Beauvais (Loburn) for 13, by J. Johnson (Rakaia) for the best out of a line of 32, and N. B. Carney (Ashburton), who had 68 which made from 17s Id upwards. Woolly ewes from W. F. Bishop (Rakaia) fetched to 45s Id.

FAT CATTLE Fat cattle values eased during the sale The market, for which there was an entry of 434 head, opened out on about a par with last week for steers and heifers, and values remained about this level for about two-thirds of the auction. At this stage, however, the market began to sag, and by the end of the sale steers were cheaper by up to 50s on prices ruling in the earlier part of the day. Heifers did not show very much alteration, but values for cows were back about 40s a head right through the 'sale. Over the last two races of the sale auctioneers had difficulty in interesting buyers at all. and there was an occasional passing. . The. offering Wds generally of good quality, with a fair representation of cows. Top price of the sale—£66 12s 6d—was paid to the estate E. W. Gray (Teddington) for a steer. Next best price was £63 2s 6d for one from R. L. Hunter (Ellesmere), followed by £62 17s 6d for the tops of a line of steers from' J. F. Cracroft Wilson (Cashmere). L. W. Moore (Philpotts road) headed the heifer section with one bringing £46 12s 6d. Another one from K. Macleod (Le Bons Bay.) fetched £47 12s 6d, and the estate E. W. Gray also had one at £47 2s 6d.

STORE CATTLE I Demand for store cattle tended to . weaken slightly, due probably to the I deteriorating feed position in many • parts oi the province. Values' were ; quoted back about 30s a head. A massive Short- • horn topped the sale at £6B 12s 6d, 3 a Friesian sold at £55 2s 6d, a Jer- - sey at £4B 7s 6d and another black 5 buU at £47 7s 6d. Otherwise price; s moved between about £l4 17s 6d - and £33 7s 6d.

Dairy Cattle Prices were lower for cows in the dairy cattle section. The entry totalled only about 16 head. The cows in the yarding were mainly Jerseys of a good useful type and for these prices were down by up to 60s a head on values ruling over the last few weeks. The balance of the entry was of a secondary nature, and for these the decline was of the order of. up to 50s a head. Heifers were few in number, but were of generally quite good quality. They also earned prices that were not up to late rates. Apart from a Friesian cow in calf which realised £36, cows sold from £24 to £32. The best heifers ranged from £33 to £4O, with others making down to about £24.

Vealers The yarding of veal totalled about 180, and was made up of generally good quality cattle, particularly in the small calf and large runner categories. For small calves of quality values were better by 10s to 15s, and bigger cattle of good quality were dearer by 50s to 60s. Secondary and inferior types, however, showed little alteration. Best large runners made from £34 2s 6d to £3B 2s 6d. medium £3l 2s 6d to £33 2s Bd, small £27 2s 6d to £3O 2s 6d; large suckers £2B 2s 6d to £32 2s 6d, medium suckers £24 2s 6a to £27 2s 6d, light £lB 2s 6d to £22 2s 6d; large calves £2O 2s 6d to £23 13s 6d, medium calves £l4 2s 6a to £lB 2s 6d, small calves £8 2s 6d to £l3 2s 6d, and bobby calves from 70s upwards. Fat Pigs There was a similar entry in the porker section, and as was the case last week, quality generally was very poor. Far too many over-fat types were yarded. The very best long thin types met spirited competition, but other classes met a mediocre demand, and in odd cases over-fat sorts were unsaleable. In the bacon section there was a medium entry, and here again most pigs were too heavy and too fat. All classes Suitable to the trade met a strong demand, but the over-fat types showed no improvement. The chopper entry was a little larger, with values remaining on a par with late rates.

Store Pigs There was again a medium entry In the store pig pens and quality was very good. The attendance of buyers was. however, small and although the sale opened out with a fair demand it quickly eased, and all but the best, sorts were cheaper by 10s to 15s a head, this being particularly noticeable in the small and medium stores. Values were:— Small weaners, 50s to 68s. Best weaners, 70s to 755. Slips, 76s to 82s. Small and medium stores, 83s to 955. Medium and large stores. 100 s to 114 s.
