WHITEBAIT SEASON ENDED
Good Catches In South Westland (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, Dec. 1. The whitebait season which ended yesterday was only moderately successful in many parts of the West Coast. Some large quantities from South Westland were consigned to Christchurch, but the season was poor in the Teremakau and Grey rivers. There was one big run in the Grey river early in October, when catchers were rewarded with substantial hauls, but apart from that the compensation for hours of patient waiting was not worth the effort. Holders of regular sites along the banks of the Teremakau river were dismayed one morning to find that the stands which they had gone to so much trouble to erect had been washed away by floods. No figures are available regarding the catches in the rivers and streams between Karamea in the north and Paringa in the south.
