ICEBREAKER EASTWIND
Trip From U.S. To Antarctic BOSTON, December 1. The United States Coast Guard icebreaker Eastwind left for Antarctica today. Deep in the hold of the 269 ft vessel are 2400 frozen cookies in cases marked “Do not open untU Christmas.’’ The cookies, a dozen each for the 200 crewmen and civilians aboard, were baked by the Coast Guard officers’ wives' club. The ship will be in mid-Paciflc at Christmas time. The Eastwind will take part in the operation to re-supply United States scientific outposts in Antarctica. One sailor struggled up the gang plank just before sailing carrying eight small Christmas trees.
