SANTA CLAUS’ WAGES
Sydney Men Urged To Join Union (Rec. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, December 2. Sydney’s 250 temporary professional Santa Claus may be unionised. The Miscellaneous Workers’ Union proposed a drive this week to get the Santas int othe union. An organiser of the union (Mr J. Dwyer) said last night that some of Sydney’s Santa Claus already were in his union. Mr Dwyer said the men were being paid about £l6 10s a week in city stores. “We think they should be paid £25 a week,” Mr Dwyer said. “Decent wages would attract the right sort of man into the Santa Claus industry. Men working as Santa Claus should be of high repute, fond of children, and neither smoke nor drink on duty.” Mr Dwyer, who is also a member of the State Parliament, has inside knowledge of the job. For the last three years, in Australia’s summer Christmas heat, he has donned red robes and false whiskers to act as Santa at the Legislature’s Christmas party.
