EUROPEAN DEFENCE
Rift At Paris Talks (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) PARIS, December 2. The West German Chancellor, Dr. Adenauer, and the French President, General de Gaulle, tackle subjects on which they clearly do not see eye to eye today, the second and last day of their latest talks. These questions include the
French attitude towards the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance and particularly French objections to “integrating” troops under the American Supreme Commander, General Lauris Norstad.
A preliminary discussion of this question between Dr. Adenauer and the French Prime Minister, Mr Michel Debre, yesterday resulted in total disagreement, according to usually reliable sources.
The Chancellor insisted that the presence of American troops in Europe was essential for European security. Integration of the European troops into N.AT.O. was essential for keeping the Americans in Europe, he argued. Mr Debre apparently was unable to accept this argument and took the line that N.A.T.O. in its present form was to some extent out of date.
In spite of his keenness for developing intimate FrancoGerman relations, Dr. Adenauer has always had reservations about General de Gaulle’s views on the organisation of N.A.T.O.
