EXPRESS FROM SOUTH LATE
Hinemoa Sails At 115 p.m. A breakdown to the engine of the Invercargill-Lyttelton express between Bankside and Dunsandel caused the inter-island steamer Hinemoa to be almost three hours late leaving Lyttelton last evening. The express, which normally arrives at Christchurch at 7.25 p.m., came in at 10.9 p.m., and reached Lyttelton at 10.50 p.m. By the time passengers had gone aboard and luggage transferred it was 11.5 p.m. before the Hinemoa sailed. The Hinemoa is expected to make up part of the lost time during its journey and is expected in Wellington about 8 a.m. today. < Patiently waiting at Lyttelton, passengers in the Hinemoa who embarked shortly before 8 p.m. lined the ship’s rails and cheered each train’s arrival at the port with “Here comes the good old express.” When the express finally arrived at 10.50 p.m. the vessel left 15 minutes later. The express’s engine broke down between Bankside and Dunsandei and a request for a relief was sent from Rolleston. When the relief arrived the disabled engine and the train had to be shunted to the nearest siding to put off the disabled engine. When the operation was completed the train restarted its journey.
