APPEAL FOR HOMES
£5325 Handed Over Proceeds of £5325 collected for the combined children’s homes’ appeal were distributed to representatives of the Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian churches at a function organised by the Presbyterian Social Service Association at Elizabeth House yesterday. The president of the association (Mr R. McPherson) handed cheques of £1775 each to the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren), the Rev. Archer Harris, of the Methodist Church, and the Rev. Stuart Francis, of the Presbyterian Church.
The fund was raised by a street day appeal (£1335), a house-to-house collection (£2446) and a gift from the McKenzie Trust (£750).A board of trustees had now taken the place of the committee conducting the combined children’s homes appeals, said Mr McPherson. “It is considered jnuch more satisfactory from the point of view of the contributing public to have funds administered by a legallyconstituted trust board.” Mr McPherson thanked those who had given freely, both in services and donations. Friends of the churches and other organisations had helped in the street day appeal and the house-to-house appeal was organised by Bible classes in the city and suburbs. “These included Bible classes from Baptist, Congregational, and Church of Christ Churches, which do not get a penny of the proceeds. but which willingly assisted in this worthy cause,” said Mr McPherson.
